Working in Brazil

If you are looking into moving to Brazil and starting a new life in the country you will probably start looking for a job sooner or later. There are many differences between finding a job in the UK and finding one in Brazil. Job-hunting in Brazil is often said to be “Not about what you know, but about WHO you know” and this is true in many situations. Brazilians are friendly people who are more than happy to recommend a friend for a position in the company they work for and, most importantly, Brazilian companies do take recommendation from someone they know into account when recruiting a person to work for them.

The keyword when looking for a job in Brazil is NETWORKING. Take time to get to know people, do not be afraid to introduce yourself or to join in a conversation. Brazilians value face-to-face contact immensely, so scheduling a meeting with the person responsible for the Human Resources department of a company, telling them a bit about yourself and leaving your CV in person, puts you ahead of the competition by a large margin. Interviews are the most important part of the recruitment process in Brazil; you may have an outstanding CV and background but hardly ever will you be given a job if you are not well prepared to face a long interview.

Even though Brazil has one of the biggest and most active internet communities in the world, joining a job search website or sending CVs via e-mail to people who have never seen you will generate little result when compared to what you can achieve by being out on the street talking to people and building relationships.
