The Crafty Superpower

23 April 2009

Source: Newsweek
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is on a roll. In recent weeks he’s shared a dais with Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy, and drew effusive praise (”My man!”) from Barack Obama at the G20 summit in London. He even had a photo op with Queen Elizabeth II. The former machine-tool worker, who spent decades picketing “savage capitalism,” is now the toast of bankers and boardrooms. “Don’t you think it’s chic that we are now lending the IMF money?” he joked at a press conference.
Not so long ago, such scenes would have been improbable. With Brazil’s tender democracy, clawing poverty and an accident-prone economy, the country’s leaders were more likely to be queuing for a bailout than standing toe-to-toe with rainmakers on the international stage. After decades of false steps, Brazil has become a solid free-market democracy, a rare island of stability in a region of turmoil and [...]

Will Richard Branson crack Brazil?

16 March 2009

Billionaire and serial airline starter Richard Branson now wants a peice of brazil.

Branson just announced that he’s in talks with partners in the country to launch what we can only assume will be called Virgin Brazil.
He’ll certainly need the help of locals: The Nation only follows foreign investors to control 20 percent of a given domestic airline. That’s a problem David Neeleman was able to avoid with his own new airline because the JetBlue founder has Brazilian citizenship.
Branson says talks are ongoing, which makes sense: It took Virgin America years to get off the ground because of foreign ownership concerns,  hyped by already-established airlines in the US. We can’t imagine TAM and Gol will be too keen to compete with him on their South American turf.

Brazil, which will host the 2014 foot World Cup and is short-listed as a contender to hold the 2016 Olympic Games, is one of the few countries around the world to buck the general downward economic trend to-date. In fact, with mass regeneration taking place across the country, the prospects for future capital growth look promising.
Furthermore, Cross-border mergers and acquisitions also rose by 13.6%, producing around $9.7m (£7.2m) for Brazil’s economy, compared to $8.6m (£6.3m) in 2007.
A recent poll carried out by the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate rated Brazil as the second global destination for capital appreciation, after the USA.
