2016 Olympic Games Medals to be made from recycled electronics

Medals for the 2016 Olympic Games which will take place in Rio de Janeiro will be made from recycled electronic equipment it has been announced.

Initially made from Gold, silver and bronze, the award medals now stand to include metal from discarded household appliances. Items such as broken laptops, mobile phones and cookers will become part of the Brazilian Mint production line for 4,924 award medals and 75,000 participation medals illustrating Rio 2016’s commitment to sustainability.

“The medals are one of the most important symbols of the Games and we are very pleased that we can count on the Brazilian Mint as our partner in this unique moment in the history of Brazilian sport,” said Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman.

The Brazilian mint will also produce Rio 2016’s medal ribbons, award diplomas, certificates of authenticity, participation and commemorative certificates, as well as the commemorative medals, which are special collectors’ items.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is a very special event and we could not stay out of it,” said Brazilian Mint President Francisco Franco. “We hope most of these medals will be won by Brazilian competitors.”

The Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games announced Rio de Janeiro as it’s’ host during the 121st IOC Session held in Denmark on October 2nd 2009 and will prepare its opening ceremony for 10,500 athletes from 204 countries on the 5th August 2016.
