Santander has made a multi-million dollar investment in a new facility built to support electronic banking channels in Brazil.
The Spanish bank has invested R$1.1bn ($338m) in the datacentre in response to the increasing consumer demand and has been facilitated to increase availability, as well as processing and storage capabilities for electronic banking channels such as mobile banking.
According to the Brazilian Banking Federation (Febraban), the number of banking transactions carried out via a mobile device has gone up from 4.7 billion in 2014 to 11.2 billion in 2015, a 138 percent adoption growth.
This increase is significant given that in 2012, Brazil’s mobile banking accounted for less than 1 percent of all banking transactions.
In an interview with Valor Econômico newspaper, Santander Brazil CIO Marino Aguiar said “Looking at long-term demands, we’ve built the datacentre with enough capacity and availability to support the aggressive growth that we have observed in the mobile and Internet channels.” He also added that the investment in private and hybrid cloud resources for the new facility means that the total operating cost for the bank will also be reduced.
Brazilian banks have been making big investments to respond to the demands of tech-savvy customers: Febraban numbers suggest that these institutions have invested R$19.2bn ($5.3bn) in technology in 2015 placing Brazil 7th in the global ranking of investments in technology within banking in relation to GDP.
